Like to hike? Like to camp? Backpacking puts both of those together. Our destination is Caprock Canyon, Texas, a unique environment with hoodoos, striated canyon walls, and ravines. This is John Wayne Western country.
Participants will be carrying all of their gear onto the trail and hiking for three days and should be fairly physically fit. You should be able to carry a 30-pound backpack for 6 to 7 miles. Because packers should carry no more than 25% of their body weight, participants need to be close to 100 pounds or more.
Lighter packers can bring an adult volunteer to help carry their gear. This is an intermediary trip, so the trail will have longer day hikes than a beginner trip with more elevation changes.
Backpacking requires some specialized gear. The pack list can be found at
If you do not have the required type of backpack or sleeping bag/pad, we rent out equipment for $5.00 a weekend (per backpack and sleeping bag). Please do not invest in expensive equipment until you know you like the sport!
There is also a required pack check the weekend before on Saturday, March 17 at 10:00 am at the Girl Scout Council office. If you do not live in the OKC metro area, arrangements can be made to do a pack check locally.
